The Bulldogs of Carl Junction brought a strong season to a close Saturday at the Missouri Class 2 State Wrestling Tournament in Columbia.  Three wrestlers were still on the mats as the tourney was drawing nearer to the end, and an overall team score of 62 points was good enough for the Bulldogs to finish seventh in the state.

Trenton Landes, competing in the 145-pound division, made it to the state championship match but lost a narrow 3-2 decision to Dylan Marriott of Excelsior Springs.  Landes, who won his first three matches in Columbia, finished second with an overall record of 41-5.  Marriott ended his state title run with a season record of 49-3.

Dalton England, a wrestler in the 140-pound division, lost his first match at Columbia but came storming back with four victories in a row to make it to the third place match.  England took home third place with a 6-4 overtime decision over David Miller of Platte County.  England finished his season at 37-12.

Levi Maggard was another CJ wrestler claiming a third place finish.  Maggard, at the 189-pound level, went 4-1 in Columbia including his final round 5-1 victory over Nicholas Plummer of Chillicothe.  Maggard finished the year 39-7.

Two other CJ wrestlers advanced to state and helped contribute to the points total.  Sostenes Infante (135 pounds) and Nicholas Koon (119) each finished 2-2 in the state event and were among the final 10 wrestlers in each of their respective weight divisions.

Congratulations to the Carl Junction wrestling team and their head coach, Jeremy Finley.

Seneca dominated the lower weight classes Saturday and easily won the Carl Junction Wrestling Tournament.

The Indians won five of the first six championship matches and finished with 267.5 team points. Pittsburg was second with 205 and Carthage edged Carl Junction 139-136.5 for third place.

Seneca’s champions were Blake Byrne at 103 pounds, Tate Smith at 112, Timothy Harner at 119, Colby Skaggs at 130, Chance Eads at 135 and Dalton Cummings at 171.

“We’re getting a little more consistant throughout the season,” Seneca head coach Jeff Sill said. “There were some good matches.

“We had four guys out taking the ACT test. It was a good opportunity for the younger guys and it was good to see them have an opportunity to shine.”

Joining the varsity for the tournament were Seneca’s Logan Grady, who captured third place at 103, and Jalen Skaggs, who won by pin to take third place at 135.

Seneca had a close call at 130 when junior Colbey Skaggs, defending state champion at 125, took a 5-3 decision over Webb City senior Patrick Grigsby, a state qualifier last season.

“He went up a weight class for a little more competition,” Sill said. “He’s shaking some rust off and is looking better.”

Most of Pittsburg’s scoring came in the heavier weight classes. Daniel Blair at 152 and Beau Bennett at 285, who pinned Webb City’s Taven Meister, won championships, while runners-up for the Purple Dragons were Aaron Seybold at 119, Brent Koehn at 140, Austin Winner at 189 and Broc Bennett at 215.

Carthage passed Carl Junction for third place when Erick Vargas took third at 285 by pinning Seneca’s Steve Adams. Seth Beckner of Carthage was runner-up at 135.

Carl Junction took first place at 140 when senior Dalton England, who placed third in the state tournament last spring, scored at the buzzer for a 4-2 decision over Koehn.

Levi Maggard of Carl Junction won the title at 189 with a 21-5 decision over Winner.

“Levi had a big day,” Carl Junction head coach Jeremy Finley said. “Dalton England wrestled well. Trent Landes (second at 145 to defending state runner-up Ethan Davis of Monett) and Jayden Gunnett (third at 171) wrestled well. Nick Koon wrestled well and got third place in a tough bracket (119).

“We have some things to work on,” Finley said. “By no means are we where we want to be in February. But it was a step in the right direction.”

Monett’s Chris Renteria at 125 and Davis at 145 took first place, along with Josh Hambleton of Labette County at 160 and Jordan Moffett of McDonald County at 215.

CJ Finishes:  Nick Koon (119), 3rd Place; Dalton England (140), 1st Place; Trent Landes (145), 2nd Place; Devin Hance (152), 4th Place; Jayden Gunnett (171), 3rd Place; Levi Maggard (189), 1st Place; Jacob Wall (215), 4th Place.  Overall Finish:  4th Place out of 11 Teams.
