Carl Junction netters will
team district title

Carl Junction, the top seed, beat
Aurora 5-2 for the MSHSAA Class 1 District 11 Tournament team
tennis championship on Tuesday at the Joplin Athletic Complex.
Aurora nipped Thomas Jefferson 5-4 at the Millennium Tennis and
Fitness Club and Carl Junction hurdled Mount Vernon 5-0 in the
semifinals.
Aurora stopped visiting Monett 5-0 and Mount Vernon ousted
visiting College Heights 5-1 in the opening round on Monday.
Carl Junction and No. 2 Thomas Jefferson had byes.
Carl Junction, 12-2 in duals under Ryan Odaffer, will travel for
the team sectional round on Oct. 15. “I thought we played very
well during the two matches,” Odaffer said. “Five of our six
girls played in the finals last season (losing to Monett). They
knew what to expect and were ready.”
Carl Junction won four of the six singles matches and won the
only doubles match that was required. Emily Cook, Haley Pope,
Megan Boline and Rebecca O’Hanahan won in singles for Carl
Junction in the final. O’Hanahan and Cook prevailed at No. 2
doubles.
Cook defeated Calli Claybough 6-1,
6-1 at No. 1 singles.
Aurora’s Courtney Thrasher and Shay Sanches won at No. 5 and No.
6 singles, respectively.
Thomas Jefferson athletic director Chris Myers said the
Cavaliers will serve as hosts of the District 11 individual
competition on Friday. Singles will be held at the Millennium
and doubles on the Thomas Jefferson courts.
Carl Junction 7, Neosho 2

Emily Cook defeated Elizabeth Wood 8-4 at No. 1 singles as the
Bulldogs hiked their dual record to 9-2. Haley Pope and Megan
Boline beat the Wildcats’ Wood and Janci Fowkes 8-3 at No. 1
doubles on the Missouri Southern courts. Other singles winners
for Carl Junction were Pope, Rebecca O’Hanahan and Cheyenne
Pickett. The Bulldogs swept doubles as Cook-O’Hanahan and Sierra
Edwards-Kenzie Kuykendall also won. Rachel Stillions and
Kaileigh Thomlinson win in singles for Neosho.
Carl Junction wins Big 8 title

In just its third year, the Carl Junction tennis program already
has a Big 8 title under its belt. The Bulldogs wrapped up an
undefeated run through the league on Monday with a 6-3 win over
Aurora at Missouri Southern. “We only won once the first year
and we were about .500 last year,” Carl Junction coach Ryan
Odaffer said. “So for us to go undefeated in the league shows
how hard the girls have worked. It says a lot about them.” Emily
Cook, Haley Pope, Megan Boline and Rebecca O’Hanahan all picked
up singles wins for Carl Junction. Pope and Boline teamed up for
a doubles win, as did Cook and O’Hanahan. Carl Junction moved to
8-2 overall with the win and will face Neosho at 4:30 p.m. today
at Missouri Southern.
Carl Junction 9, Carthage 0
The Joplin Globe, 9/20/11
The Bulldogs improved to 6-2 with
the shutout on the Missouri Southern courts. Carl Junction wins
in singles competition were logged by Emily Cook, Haley Pope,
Rebecca O'Hanahan, Megan Boline, Seirra Edwards, and Kenzie
Kuykendall. Cook-O'Hanahan, Pope-Boline, and Edwards-Kuykendall
won in doubles. Cook defeated Morgan Guidie 8-2 at No. 1
singles. Cook-O'Hanahan beat Guidie-Makenzie Copeland 8-2 at No.
1 doubles.
Carl Junction 7, Mount Vernon 2
The Joplin Globe, 9/16/11
The Bulldogs hiked their dual record to 5-2 with the win on the
Missouri Southern courts. The Mountaineers’ Paige McCoy beat
Emily Cook 8-5 at No. 1 singles and joined with Channing Bennett
in winning 8-5 at No. 1 doubles against Haley Pope and Megan
Boline. But the Bulldogs swept the remaining matches. Pope,
Rebecca O’Hanahan, Boline, Cheyenne Pickett and Kenzie
Kuykendall won in singles. Cook-Kuykendall and O’Hanahan-Seirra
Edwards won in doubles.
Webb City 7, Carl Junction 2
The Joplin Globe, 9/14/11
Maranda Miller sparked the Cardinals by defeating Emily Cook 8-3
at No. 1 singles and joined with Macy Layne in stopping Haley
Pope-Megan Boline by the identical score at No. 1 doubles. Webb
City singles wins also were secured by Kirsten Robertson, Emily
Graskemper and Elizabeth Tappana. Webb City (6-3 in duals) swept
the doubles with Robertson-Tappana and Graskemper-Darshi
Edirisooriya also winning. Carl Junction (4-2) received
victories in singles from Rebecca O’Hanahan and Kenzie
Kuykendall.
Carl Junction 9, Clever 0

The Bulldogs hiked their dual record to 4-1 with the shutout on
the Missouri Southern courts. Carl Junction’s Emily Cook, a
junior, defeated Maddi Scarlett 8-0 at No. 1 singles, Seniors
Haley Pope and Megan Boline defeated Scarlett-Shelby Beal 8-1 at
No. 1 doubles. Pope, Rebecca O’Hanahan, Boline, Cheyenne Pickett
and Kenzie Kuykendall also won in singles. Other doubles wins
were by Cook-Kuykendall and O’Hanahan-Seirra Edwards.
