Carl Junction tops Joplin
Joplin Globe, 4/24/12
Carl Junction scored four goals in a six-minute span of the first half and defeated Joplin 5-2 in a nonconference girls soccer match at South Middle School. Joplin scored first on a goal by Meghan Matheson off an assist from Kate Beckham 10 minutes into the game. But Carl Junction responded with a four-goal barrage — including two by Anissa Williams and one each by Kelsey Swarens and Sydney Solberg — that gave the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead midway through the first half.

Solberg scored again late in the first half off an assist by Swarens, who assisted Williams’ second goal. Katie Wiele also had an assist for Carl Junction.

 

Carl Junction 3, Carthage 0

Joplin Globe, 4/13/12

Sydney Solberg scored twice to lead Carl Junction past Carthage in a nonconference game.
Solberg took a pass from Shelby Campbell and scored in the 12th minute. She added a goal at the midway mark of the second half. Kelsey Swarens scored seven minutes after Solberg’s first goal. The Bulldogs took 15 shots on goal while the Tigers managed four. Alyssa Brown had three saves and Sarah Spangler one for the Bulldogs. Carthage’s  Ashley Franchex turned in eight saves.

 

Carl Junction 3, McAuley 0

Joplin Globe, 4/11/12

Kelsey Swarens scored two goals and led Carl Junction past McAuley Catholic in a nonconference match at Joplin Athletic Complex. Swarens' first goal came three minutes into the match, and her second goal came late in the second half. In between, Sydney Solberg, who assisted Swarens' first goal, scored midway through the second half.

 

Carl Junction 1, Cedar Hill Northwest 2

Joplin Globe, 4/7/12

Cedar Hill Northwest outscored the Bulldogs 5-3 on penalty kicks to prevail in the Ozark Tournament. The teams tied 1-1 in regulation and for Carl Junction, which slipped to 2-5, it was a second straight overtime loss. Carl Junction led 1-0 at the half on Anissa Williams’ unassisted goal. But Kylee Hamilton tied it for the St. Louis area school with an unassisted goal at 49:00 in the second half.
 

Carl Junction 2, Carthage 0

Joplin Globe, 4/3/12

The Bulldogs, receiving both goals from Sydney Solberg, evened their record at 2-2. Solberg, scored in the closing seconds of the first half before scoring at 58:00 in the second. Madi Adrian assisted on the second-half goal. Sarah Spangler was in goal for the Bulldogs. Carl Junction had a 15-2 advantage in shots on goal.

 

Carl Junction 3, Hillcrest 0

Joplin Globe, 3/28/12

The Carl Junction girls dominated the field in their season opener. The Bulldogs blasted 25 shots and limited Hillcrest to two. Anissa Williams tallied the first goal of the season for the Bulldogs when she took an assist from Sydney Solberg and booted it into the net six minutes into the game. Shelby Campbell and Courtney Eastman added insurance goals for the Bulldogs in the second half. Campbell’s goal was assisted by Paige Kennedy.

Webb City 2, Carl Junction 1

Matt Reynolds scored off a penalty kick with about nine minutes left to snap a tie and lift the Cardinals to their first win of the campaign. “It was a good match ... heavily contested all the way,” Cardinal coach Brad Moser said. Webb City, which has lost seven, caught the Bulldogs 1-1 in the first half on a successful corner kick from Aaron Tappana. Jacob Pelt had the goal for Carl Junction. Webb City statistics had the Bulldogs ahead in shots (8-5). Blake Ward had seven saves for Webb City and Payton Pollock six for Carl Junction.

 

Carl Junction 3, Aurora 1

Jordan Keller had two of the Bulldogs’ three goals in the first half. R.J. Pericola had the third goal for Carl Junction. Tucker Morey assisted on Keller’s second goal. Aurora’s Sergio Rodriguez, assisted by Johnny Lindeman, tallied in the second half. Aurora statistics had the visitor with a 30-21 shots advantage. Mason Edwards, a junior, had 13 saves for Aurora and Payton Pollock nine for the winner.

 

Carl Junction 3, Cassville 1

Jordan Keller tallied two first-half goals to give the Bulldogs a halftime lead. Cassville’s David Verde scored eight minutes into the second half to slice the deficit to 2-1, but the Bulldogs’ R.J. Pericola scored nine minutes later to regain the two-goal advantage. Carl Junction owned a 23-10 advantage in shots. Bulldogs goalie Payton Pollock had nine saves, and Cassville’s Kevin Callahan stopped 18 shots.
 

Carl Junction 2, Monett 1

Carl Junction collected an important district win in a non-conference varsity soccer tilt against Monett. The Bulldogs led 1-0 at the half thanks to a goal by Lane Morrill. They went up 2-0 on an R.J. Pericola score in the second half. Travis Thompson booted one in for the Cubs late in the game, but the Bulldogs were able to hang on. The Bulldogs blasted 14 shots on goal, and keeper Payton Pollock added 15 saves.


Boys lose soccer season opener

College Heights 4, Carl Junction 2
 

A second half surge helped the College Heights Cougars power past Carl Junction at College Heights Christian School. Trailing 1-0 entering the second half, the Cougars rebounded with goals from Dalton Zarrabi, Brantley Gossett, Josiah Braeckel and Michael Junge to spoil the Bulldogs’ season opener. Gossett also added a pair of assists.

Jordan Keller and R.J. Pericola each scored for the Bulldogs. Keeper Payton Pollock recorded four saves.
