2011-12 Season

Travis Vogt scored eight of his 32 points in the final minute of Carl Junction’s 64-59 come-from-behind victory over Joplin on Monday night at Young Gymnasium. Vogt, a 6-foot-1 junior, gave Carl Junction a 60-59 lead with 59 seconds left on a layup after a steal near midcourt by sophomore guard Matt Magee. Vogt was 14 of 14 at the free-throw line, including six for six in the final minute.

“He had a heckuva night, especially in the second half,” said Carl Junction head coach Ryan Odaffer. “Those free throws he hit in the fourth quarter were crucial. He’s a special player and he had a special night tonight.”

Carl Junction, 9-11, overcame a 22-point performance by Joplin sophomore Charlie Brown, who scored 10 points — including a pair of 3-pointers — in the fourth quarter. Joplin took its largest lead of the game, 36-24, early in the second half after a 3-pointer by Gabe Sachetta and a breakaway layup by Brown.

“At that point, I was a split second away from calling a time out,” Odaffer said. “It was real close to getting away from us. Then we got a steal. It’s a credit to our players. They knew what they needed to do. Our intensity on defense picked up without me having to call a timeout.”

The steal began a 13-0 Carl Junction run — in 1 minute, 40 seconds — led by Magee’s two field goals and two assists. He scored nine of his 13 points in the second half and was assigned to guard Brown for most of the game. “Matt did an excellent job on Brown,” Odaffer said. “I know Charlie still got 22, but he did a great job making it hard for him.”

Joplin quickly regained the lead on a court-length pass from Sachetta to Adam St. Peter for a layup, followed by a 3-pointer by Brown. The game was tied at 45 going into the fourth quarter. Joplin tied the score at 56 on an inbounds play to St. Peter with 3:02 to go, and Brown’s 3-pointer with 1:11 left gave Joplin a 59-56 lead.

“It’s really tough to digest when our kids played as hard as they did,” said Joplin head coach Jeff Williams. “But we turned the ball over four times in the last minute, and they’re usually sure-handed.”

CJ Boys Classic Wrap up

Blue Springs prepared for its return to Suburban Conference competition by defeating Carl Junction 72-41 Saturday in the Carl Junction Classic. The Wildcats, who won the tournament, led 16-2 with 2 minutes, 37 seconds left in the first quarter and spiced their performance with four dunks in the first half.

Parsons, which edged Carl Junction 55-54 on Thursday, outlasted Seneca 63-57 Saturday and was the runner-up.

Delondre Hall, a 6-foot-4 senior guard, led Blue Springs with 23 points, including back-to-back fast-break dunks after a pair of steals near midcourt in the second quarter. “Our kids came out strong and played real well,” said Blue Springs head coach Frank Wheeler. “We got it done on the defensive end early. “We have two big conference games when we return. We play the two teams we’re tied with for first place.”

Blue Springs, which led 47-20 at halftime, kept its starters off the court for the first 4 1/2 minutes of the second half. Marvin Clark, a 6-6 junior, had 14 points and Jay Corwin, a 6-5 junior, scored 12. Junior guard Travis Vogt of Carl Junction picked up his third foul with 3 1/2 minutes left in the first half and was limited to 11 points. Chase Marrs and Payton Walker each scored nine.

Vogt was named to the all-tournament team along with Clark and Hall of Blue Springs, Kyler Ng of Seneca, and Wes Krull and Steve Jones of Parsons. Corwin was named the most valuable player.

Against Seneca, Parsons played its third game in three days that was decided in the last 30 seconds. “I’m glad to get out of here with two Ws,” said Parsons head coach Mike Krull. “We’re not kidding when we say all of our games have been like that. There are only two that haven’t.” Parsons, 10-1 and ranked No. 10 in Class 4A by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, made nine of 10 free throws in the last half of the fourth quarter against Seneca, including four-for-four in the last 33 seconds. “They did a good job of battling us inside,” Krull said. “Through this tournament, we’ve been a good outside shooting team, but they’re a better outside shooting team than we are.”

Seneca, which broke the school record with 13 3-pointers Thursday against Blue Springs, had six in a 59-54 loss to Carl Junction and six more against Parsons. Ng and Daniel Noah each scored two of their three 3-pointers apiece in the first quarter, but the Indians were only able to keep pace with Parsons until they went on an 8-0 run and took a 24-18 lead early in the second quarter.

From there, Parsons went on a 14-0 run and led 32-28 at halftime. The two teams traded baskets in the second half until Ng’s third 3-pointer tied the game at 55 with 2:38 left. Ng led Seneca with 24 points, Noah scored 13 and Payton Rawlins had 10. Krull led Parsons with 14 points, Tevin Johnson had 13 and James Jackson had 12.

Free throws lift CJ past Seneca in CJ Classic

by Richard Polen, Joplin Globe, 1/21/12

Carl Junction made 15 of 18 free throws in the last three minutes and defeated Seneca 63-55 Friday night in the Carl Junction Classic boys tournament. The lead changed hands six times in the second half before Carl Junction’s Jordan Keller made a pair of free throws with 2 minutes, 23 seconds remaining that gave the Bulldogs the lead for good at 55-54.

Seneca sank four 3-pointers in the first half and led 30-18 before Carl Junction’s defense triggered a 15-2 run in the last five minutes of the half. The Bulldogs led 33-32 at halftime.
“I think their pressure got to us,” said Seneca head coach Will King. “They did a good job pressuring us. Our overall effort was good. We’re making good strides.” Seneca’s hot start included back-to-back 3-pointers early in the second quarter by Kyler Ng, who scored 16 points. Daniel Noah, who sank four 3-pointers, led the Indians with 19 points. The shooting spree came a night after the Indians broke the school record with 13 3-pointers in an 87-62 loss to Blue Springs.

“They came out firing,” said Carl Junction head coach Ryan Odaffer. “From halftime on, it was a game that could have gone either way. They’re definitely headed in the right direction. They got better in a week since the last time we played them.” Junior guard Travis Vogt made seven of eight free throws and led Carl Junction with 19 points. Chase Marrs, a 6-foot senior, had 13 points and was five of six at the line.

Carthage too much for Carl Junction

by Richard Polan, Joplin Globe, 1/17/12

Carthage used its height and transition game to its advantage in the second half Monday night and defeated Carl Junction 76-57 in a boys nonconference game. Carthage led 34-33 early in the second half before it went on a 10-2 run, including six for six shooting at the free-throw line and two baskets on offensive rebounds by Desmond Buerge. Buerge, a 6-5 senior, led the Tigers with 23 points, 6-5 junior Nathan Reid scored 16 and 6-5 freshman Jaryd Coss scored 15.

“In the second half, they were just beating us down the floor,” said Carl Junction head coach Ryan Odaffer. “They’re a lot bigger than we are. It was a difficult matchup for us.
“We played very well. We played under control. We had five guys on the floor playing as a team.”

Carthage, 14-2, took a 27-20 lead after an 8-0 run in the second quarter that included baskets inside by Strubberg and Coss and a basket on an offensive rebound by senior guard Sam Hilton. Carl Junction tied the score at 28 on a drive to the basket by Travis Vogt, a 6-1 senior who led the Bulldogs with 23 points. Matt Magee scored nine points and Chase Marrs had eight, including a shot at the buzzer that pulled CJ within 34-30 at halftime.

“Their guards are good. They made it hard on us,” said Carthage head coach Steve Ray. “We had a group of kids who jelled real well. We had a good flow going and that group did a nice job on both ends.”

Carthage built a 53-40 lead going into the fourth quarter and used the same recipe of inside scoring and accurate free-throw shooting to take a 65-45 lead with 4:14 remaining.

That’s why they beat us. They deserved to win.” The Mustangs, in their first season under Trent Barratt, outscored Carl Junction 33-22 in the second half. Added Odaffer: “It (the loss) was a combination of a lot of things. They outrebounded us, we didn’t shoot well from the free-throw line. We turned the ball over too much.” Payton Walker, Matt Magee and Jordan Keller tallied 17, 16 and 11, respectively, for the Bulldogs. Scoring leader Travis Vogt missed most of the game because of sickness.

Lady Bulldogs sport young roster

by LaDonna Allen, Jasper County Citizen

Carl Junction basketball coach Jonathan Wengert will lead a very young team into the 2011-2012 season. With only one senior on the Lady Bulldogs’ roster and no returning starters, Wengert will have to count on some of the youngest players to step up and fill varsity spots. Shelby Campbell, the lone senior, will lead the team into her final high school season. Juniors Sydney Koch, Lakin Eberhart and Sydney Koch will join Campbell as the only upperclassmen on the team.

The lion’s share of the roster includes 17 sophomores and freshmen. While that could leave most coaches apprehensive, Wengert said he knows there are many talented athletes among that list of underclassmen. Katie Skaggs, sophomore, and Eberhart will bring height to the team. Wengert said Skaggs, at six foot, should play a big role for the Lady Dogs. The coach said it is likely that fans will see some of the youngest players in varsity action. "We don’t really have anything set in concrete," said Wengert. "There are some good battles going on with the younger kids." Wengert said sophomores, or even freshmen, could earn starting positions. "It’s not a done deal," he said, adding that every player will have a chance to earn a varsity spot. Whether or not they earn a spot among the starting five, Wengert said several of the talented underclassmen will likely be seeing a lot of minutes of varsity play this year.

While the younger players could be make an impact this year, Wengert said the future is also looking bright with so many young players. With valuable varsity experience in the first years of their high school careers, the team will be a force to reckon with for several years. "Not only are their strong freshmen and sophomores, but even the eighth graders are strong. We have a lot to look forward to," Wengert said. Although the Lady Dogs may not have a lot of experience heading into the 2011-2012 season, they do bring enthusiasm and energy to the court.
